Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof has announced the resignation of his government after a major coalition partner, the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) led by Geert Wilders, pulled out over disagreements on immigration policy. The move has thrown the Netherlands into political uncertainty and is expected to trigger new elections.

Key Highlights:

Prime Minister Dick Schoof will continue to lead a caretaker government until new elections are held. The date for the elections has not yet been set.

The immediate cause of the collapse was Geert Wilders’ decision to withdraw the PVV from the coalition. Wilders was frustrated that his strict 10-point asylum and immigration plan was not accepted by the other coalition partners.

Wilders’ proposals included closing the border to asylum seekers, halting family reunification, and sending some asylum seekers back to their countries of origin.

Coalition partners expressed shock and frustration at the sudden move. Dilan Yesilgoz, leader of the VVD party, called the decision “irresponsible,” especially given current security challenges in Europe.

This is the second time in less than two years that a Dutch government has collapsed over immigration policy. The previous administration under Mark Rutte also fell for similar reasons.

The political crisis comes just weeks before the Netherlands is set to host a major NATO summit, raising concerns about the country’s ability to make key decisions, including a planned increase in defense spending.

Opposition parties have already called for swift elections, arguing that the country needs stable leadership and a new mandate from voters.
