Gautam Gambhir, now coaching the Indian team, recently addressed the buzz around Shreyas Iyer’s absence from the Test squad for the England series. Even though Iyer has been piling on runs in both the IPL and domestic cricket, his name was missing from the list, which has left many fans scratching their heads.
Key Highlights:
Gambhir was pretty direct about the situation. He said, “Anyone can be called if they are in good form. We can only pick 18.” He made it clear that strong performances, whether in the IPL or Ranji Trophy, always keep a player in the mix.
Shreyas Iyer has had a great season. He led Punjab Kings to the IPL final, scored over 600 runs, and has also been consistent in first-class cricket.
Despite these numbers, the selectors chose players like Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair, and Abhimanyu Easwaran for the England tour. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, explained that there just wasn’t room for Iyer this time, but didn’t close the door on future opportunities.
Karun Nair’s return to the squad after seven years shows that the team is willing to reward players who work hard and perform in domestic cricket.
With Shubman Gill leading the team and Rishabh Pant as his deputy, there’s a clear focus on the next generation. The retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have opened up spots for younger players.
Gambhir’s main message is simple: if you keep scoring runs, you’ll always have a chance to make a comeback, even if it’s in the middle of a series.
