In a landmark moment for Texas politics, Indian-American candidates Sanjay Singhal and Sukh Kaur have clinched decisive victories in city council runoff elections, while Sugar Land ushers in a new era with Carol McCutcheon as mayor. These results underscore the growing influence and civic engagement of the Indian-American community across key Texan cities.
Sanjay Singhal, a retired energy executive and IIT Delhi alumnus, captured Sugar Land’s District 2 council seat with a commanding 2,346 votes, far outpacing his rival Nasir Hussain’s 777. Singhal, who has called Sugar Land home for over three decades, ran on a platform of public safety, infrastructure upgrades, and transparent governance. “This victory belongs to the residents of District 2. I am deeply grateful for the community’s support and ready to serve with transparency and dedication,” he told supporters.
Meanwhile, in San Antonio, Sukh Kaur—an education reformer and the first Sikh woman on the city council—retained her District 1 seat with 65% of the vote. Kaur’s campaign focused on affordable housing, public transit expansion, and inclusive urban development, promising to honor the city’s history while advancing its future.
Sugar Land’s mayoral race saw Carol McCutcheon, a retired reservoir engineer, defeat William Ferguson with 6,103 votes to 5,402. McCutcheon pledged to prioritize crime response, support law enforcement, and ensure residents’ quality of life.
These victories highlight Texas’s emergence as a hub for Indian-American leadership, with swearing-in ceremonies set for the coming weeks.
