The iconic Land Rover Freelander is making a dramatic return after more than a decade, but this time, it’s going all-electric. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and its Chinese partner Chery Automobile have confirmed that the Freelander will relaunch in 2026 as an EV-only model, produced exclusively in China for both domestic and international markets.

Key Highlights:

China-First Launch: The new Freelander will be manufactured at Chery’s Changshu facility, debuting first in the world’s largest EV market. This marks a strategic shift, leveraging China’s advanced EV ecosystem and Chery’s dedicated electric platform.

Joint Venture Power: The project deepens the CJLR (Chery Jaguar Land Rover) partnership, with Chery leading on EV architecture and manufacturing, while JLR shapes the design, branding, and global positioning. The Freelander will become a sub-brand, distinct from Land Rover and Range Rover, but will likely share design DNA and premium features.

Tech Specs & Features: While official specs are still under wraps, early reports point to a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, a range exceeding 600 km, fast-charging capabilities, advanced driver assistance systems, and over-the-air software updates. The modular platform is expected to support multiple body styles, tailored for different regions.

Premium Positioning: Unlike its earlier, more affordable predecessors, the new Freelander is expected to move upmarket, with luxury features and technology that could position it just below the Discovery Sport.

Global Rollout: After its China debut, the Freelander EV is expected to expand to other markets, including India and the UK. Given Land Rover’s growing focus on India, the Freelander EV could soon find its way to Indian showrooms.

This revival isn’t just about bringing back a name—it’s a bold step into the future of electric mobility, blending British design with Chinese engineering for a new generation of global SUV buyers.
