Indian Railways will revolutionize short- and medium-distance journeys with the launch of 100 new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains and 50 Namo Bharat AC trains to enhance the comfort, carrying capacity, and connectivity of the passengers within the country.

Key Highlights
Massive Overhaul: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the addition of 100 of the new-generation MEMU trains and 50 Namo Bharat trains, one of the largest overhauls of short-distance rail operations in years.

Larger, Improved MEMUs: The new MEMU trains will consist of 16-20 coaches, a major jump from the existing 8-12, which will enable increased passenger carrying capacity and smoother travel during peak and festival seasons.

Manufacturing Hub: The MEMU trains will be manufactured in a new Kazipet factory in Telangana, which will drive local industry and jobs.

Namo Bharat Expansion: As the success of the first Namo Bharat trains on Ahmedabad-Bhuj and Jayanagar-Patna corridors continues, 50 additional fully air-conditioned, high-speed (up to 130 kmph) Namo Bharat trains will be introduced, providing best-class intercity travel.

Emphasis on Price Affordability: The government keeps general coaches on running trains, with more than 1,200 added in the last year, making travel affordable for all sections of society.

Modernization Push: Besides new trains, Indian Railways is also updating ticketing infrastructure and expanding the Amrit Bharat train fleet, with six more launches underway and 50 more being manufactured.

Passenger Impact: Indian Railways transported approximately 7.2 billion passengers during FY24, and these new trains are expected to further minimize congestion and improve travel experiences.

What This Means for Passengers Increased Comfort: More AC and overall coaches for the high-end and budget-oriented travelers.

Increased connectivity: Greater regional and intercity connectivity, especially for short and medium distances.

Faster, Smoother Trips: New trains with increased speed and improved amenities.
