If you’ve ever been stuck on a train that’s running hours late or sweating it out because the AC isn’t working, you might be surprised to know you can actually get a refund from Indian Railways. The process is called filing a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt), and it’s easier than you might think.
When can you file a TDR?
If your train is delayed by more than three hours and you decide not to travel, you’re eligible for a full refund. Just make sure you file the TDR before the train leaves your boarding station.
If the AC in your coach wasn’t working, you can get a partial refund for the difference between AC and non-AC fare. You’ll need to file the TDR within 20 hours after your train reaches its destination.
You can also file a TDR if you were forced to travel in a lower class, if the train was cancelled, or if you couldn’t travel for other valid reasons.
How do you file a TDR?
-
Log in to your IRCTC account.
-
Go to “My Transactions” and select “File TDR.”
-
Pick your PNR, choose the reason, select the passengers, and submit.
A few tips:
-
Don’t cancel your ticket if you’re filing a TDR for a delayed train—just file the TDR.
-
For AC issues, ask the TTE for a certificate on the spot.
-
Refunds can take anywhere from a week to two months, depending on the case.
If you travel by train often, it’s good to know your rights. Filing a TDR can help you get back what you’re owed when things don’t go as planned.
