Uttar Pradesh has just kicked off a new program that’s turning heads among farmers. For the first time, the state government is buying maize directly from farmers at the official Minimum Support Price (MSP). This season, that means ₹2,225 per quintal, which is a big deal for growers who usually have to haggle with middlemen or settle for less.
Here’s how it works: Farmers need to sign up on the state’s portal or the UP Kisan Mitra app. Once they’re registered, they can bring their maize to one of the government centers set up in 22 districts. The process is pretty straightforward—farmers show up with their crop, and after a quick verification, the money goes straight into their bank accounts that are linked with Aadhaar. No waiting, no chasing payments.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath even visited Auraiya recently to talk with maize growers and reassure them that the government is serious about supporting agriculture. The goal is to make sure farmers actually get the price the government promises, instead of losing out to middlemen or market fluctuations.
If farmers have questions or run into problems, there’s a helpline and local officials ready to help. The hope is that this direct purchase system will not only put more money in farmers’ pockets but also encourage more people to grow maize in the future.
