India is gearing up for a groundbreaking moment in connectivity as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the remarkable Chenab Rail Bridge—the tallest railway arch bridge in the world—on June 6, 2025. This event will also mark the launch of the Vande Bharat Express trains, ushering in a new chapter for transport and tourism in Jammu & Kashmir.
Key Highlights
• The Chenab Bridge, which towers 359 meters above the riverbed and stretches 1,315 meters, links the villages of Bakkal and Kauri in Reasi, J&K, and stands taller than the Eiffel Tower. It plays a vital role in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), finally connecting the Kashmir Valley to India’s railway network for the very first time.
• Engineered to withstand earthquakes and harsh weather conditions, this bridge is a true feat of modern engineering, constructed with over 28,000 tonnes of steel and cutting-edge techniques.
• During the inauguration, PM Modi will also launch the first Vande Bharat trains running between Katra and Baramulla, significantly cutting down travel times and enhancing regional development.
• This inauguration is part of a larger initiative, with over ₹46,000 crore allocated for infrastructure projects in the area.
Outlook
The Chenab Bridge and the new train services are set to provide reliable, year-round connectivity, revolutionizing travel, trade, and tourism in Jammu & Kashmir. This achievement highlights India’s engineering excellence and its dedication to inclusive development.
