No Place for Thin Skin on Social Media, Declares Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court has ruled that social media users must be "broad shoulders" enough to endure criticism on their tweets. Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora noted that tweets in the course of a conversation on X (formerly Twitter) cannot be examined in silos to test defamation claims. The court clarified that the tenor of social media is loose and quick and that an intricate analysis of brief tweets is disproportional. This decision was while dismissing a defamation complaint by Addictive Learning Technology Limited against four individuals for allegedly defamatory tweets. The court also observed that users have recourse under IT Rules 2021 to request removal of abusive posts.
