OpenAI Stays True to Its Roots-Non-Profit Ethos Survives the AI Gold Rush

OpenAI announced today that it will remain under the control of its non-profit entity, reversing earlier expectations of a transition to a for-profit governance structure. The decision follows months of internal and external debate, as well as discussions with civic leaders and the attorneys general of California and Delaware.

According to this new plan, OpenAI's for-profit limited liability company would be reconstituted as a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), an entity created to balance shareholder interests with the company's mission-driven objectives. The non-profit would continue to be in charge and maintain a substantial ownership position in the new PBC, so that OpenAI's initial mission-to make artificial general intelligence work for all of humanity-remains the highest priority to its operations.

OpenAI's leadership underlined that the action is not a sale but the streamlining of its setup so that the non-profit organization can more efficiently support a variety of programs and activities. CEO Sam Altman assured employees and stakeholders that the mission of the non-profit organization and the PBC will remain the same, and that with the new setup, OpenAI can hire the best and the brightest individuals and investors without undermining its core missions.

The move follows growing criticism of the leadership of OpenAI and the wider effects of artificial intelligence. The Microsoft-backed company valued at $300 billion in its previous funding round said that it will keep collaborating with regulators, partners, and newly appointed nonprofit commissioners to drive its mission in a more democratic and open way.
