Parliamentary Panel to Discuss “One Nation, One Election” Bills on February 25

The parliamentary panel that is reviewing the bills for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, referred to as “One Nation, One Election,” is set to meet on February 25. This meeting will feature testimonies from prominent legal experts, including former Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit, Niten Chandra (Secretary of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections), Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi (Chairperson of the 22nd Law Commission of India), and E M Sudarsana Natchiappan (former MP and senior Supreme Court advocate).  The committee is currently examining the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, along with the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, both of which were introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 17, 2024. These bills are designed to synchronize elections. The panel plans to conduct extensive public consultations, which will include essay-writing and debate competitions for students.
