Petrol Nears 110, Diesel Eyes 100: India’s Big-City Fuel Bill Just Got Heavier

Following a sharp jump in global crude oil prices linked to the West Asia crisis and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, Indian oil marketing companies have increased retail fuel prices after holding rates for months. The latest revision lifts petrol beyond Rs 110 per litre in some states and nudges diesel towards the Rs 100 mark in several regions.

New Metro Fuel Reality

Petrol and diesel prices have been increased by around Rs 3 per litre in major cities, resetting the cost structure for daily commuters and logistics operators alike. In New Delhi, petrol now costs Rs 97.77 per litre and diesel Rs 90.67 per litre after the hike.

In Mumbai, petrol is retailing at about Rs 106.68 per litre, while diesel is at roughly Rs 93.14 per litre. Kolkata motorists will pay about Rs 108.70 per litre for petrol and Rs 95.13 per litre for diesel, whereas in Chennai, petrol stands near Rs 103.67 and diesel at Rs 95.25 per litre.

Oil marketing companies had been absorbing losses as global crude surged but retail prices stayed frozen, reportedly leading to daily under-recoveries of Rs 1,000–1,200 crore. With crude staying elevated and volatility persisting, this hike is aimed at partially restoring their margins, but it also raises inflation risks via higher transport and input costs.
