SEBI Dials Down The Mic: Call Recording Relief On The Way For Research Analysts

The proposal, floated through recent communications and building on earlier consultation papers, comes after industry feedback that blanket call recording for all client types is costly, intrusive and of limited incremental value for sophisticated institutions. SEBI is now trying to fine-tune the research analyst framework to match risk with regulation.

What May Change For Research Analysts

Currently, SEBI-registered research analysts must maintain detailed records of all client interactions including call recordings, emails, messages and other verifiable documents for at least five years or until dispute resolution. Under the new proposal, this heavy call-recording obligation would be waived for interactions with institutional investors such as mutual funds, insurers, AIFs and large PMS clients.

However, the full record-keeping and call-recording regime will continue for retail clients, where evidence trails are seen as crucial for dispute handling and misconduct checks. SEBI’s logic: institutional desks already operate under their own compliance frameworks, while retail investors need stronger regulatory guardrails.
