Veteran banker and billionaire Uday Kotak, founder and director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan in the Trade and Industry category at the 2026 Padma Awards. Recognised for his outsized role in building India’s private banking and capital markets ecosystem, Kotak received the award from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The government named him among 13 Padma Bhushan awardees this year, out of 131 total Padma honours. Kotak called the recognition “humbling,” stressing that India today is “unrecognisable” from the country he was born into and that the journey of financial sector reform is far from over.

Uday Kotak started in the 1980s with a small bill discounting outfit that morphed into Kotak Mahindra Finance, then a full fledged bank in 2003, one of India’s first NBFC to bank conversions. Over four decades, Kotak Mahindra has grown into a universal bank with interests spanning retail banking, investment banking, asset management and insurance.

He is widely credited with pushing prudent risk management, conservative capital buffers and transparent governance at a time when several peers chased aggressive lending and later struggled with bad loans.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, among others, publicly congratulated Kotak, calling him “instrumental in shaping modern Indian banking” and praising his long term vision for India’s financial sector.
