Reviving Heritage: Shahi Jama Masjid Seeks ASI Green Light for Renovation

The management of Sambhal's Shahi Jama Masjid has sought permission from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out renovation and decoration of the historic mosque. Zafar Ali, president of the Jama Masjid Committee, confirmed that a formal request has been submitted to the ASI for approval to proceed with cleaning, painting, and maintenance tasks. This request arises amid ongoing legal disputes and controversies related to the mosque, including a recent court-ordered survey and clashes that occurred in November 2024. The Shahi Jama Masjid, which was established in 1526 during Babur's reign, has been a protected monument under ASI jurisdiction since 1920, necessitating official approval for any modifications or construction work.
