Cabinet Nod For Indian Railways’ First Semi High-Speed Corridor

The 134-km double-line semi high-speed project will link Sarkhej (Ahmedabad) with the Dholera Special Investment Region, targeting speeds of up to 200 kmph and a completion timeline up to 2030–31. It will be Indian Railways’ first semi high-speed corridor and is expected to boost connectivity to the upcoming industrial and greenfield city of Dholera.

Why It Costs Less Than Delhi–Meerut RRTS

Officials highlight that the Sarkhej–Dholera project follows a conventional heavy-rail alignment with more at-grade and embankment sections and limited tunnelling or elevated viaduct intensity compared with Delhi–Meerut RRTS. The Delhi–Meerut RRTS, built as a high-spec urban rapid transit system with extensive elevated stretches and stations, has a project cost of about ₹30,274 crore for roughly 82 km, leading to a much higher per-km cost.

Economic And Regional Development Impact

The new corridor is expected to sharply cut travel time between Ahmedabad region and Dholera, support freight and passenger movement, and catalyse investments in the Dholera SIR industrial hub. By keeping costs lower than comparable rapid transit projects, policymakers aim to maximise returns on public capex and set a template for future semi high-speed rail corridors in India.
