Kerala Chief Minister-designate V D Satheesan met senior Congress leader K C Venugopal in Thiruvananthapuram and firmly rejected speculation of a rift over cabinet formation. Emerging together, both leaders stressed party unity, signalling that the Congress is keen to close ranks ahead of the new government’s swearing-in.

Satheesan’s outreach comes after intense lobbying and internal churn over the Chief Minister’s post and cabinet berths within the Congress and the UDF. With pressure mounting from various factions and allies, the meeting with Venugopal was watched closely as a barometer of how smoothly the transition of power in Kerala will proceed.

Meeting Signals Calm Amid Churn

Satheesan visited Venugopal’s residence around early afternoon, where several Congress leaders and newly elected MLAs were present, before holding a separate 45-minute one-on-one discussion. Addressing the media later, Satheesan said discussions on cabinet formation were progressing “smoothly” and denied any personal differences with Venugopal.

Venugopal’s Message On Party Discipline

Venugopal, who had been seen as a strong contender for the chief ministership and was backed by several MLAs, underlined that differences of opinion were “natural” in a democratic party. He said the Congress functions like a family, asserting that his “full support” was behind Satheesan and that organisational discipline would guide decisions on the Kerala cabinet.

Focus Shifts To Cabinet And Governance

Satheesan indicated that the list of ministers would be finalised and forwarded to the governor shortly, highlighting Venugopal’s key role as AICC general secretary in clearing names with the high command. He reiterated that the priority now is to move beyond internal debates and focus on governance, public issues and delivering on the UDF’s election promises in Kerala.
