Scorched Stats: April Climbs Global Heat Charts, 1.5°C Barrier Breached Again

April 2025 has been confirmed as the world’s second-warmest April on record, with global average temperatures soaring 1.51°C above pre-industrial levels, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. This marks the 21st month in the past 22 months that the planet has breached the critical 1.5°C warming threshold set by the Paris Agreement. The global average surface air temperature for April reached 14.96°C, 0.6°C higher than the 1991–2020 average, and only slightly cooler than April 2024, the hottest April ever recorded.

 

Ocean temperatures also remained abnormally high, with sea surface temperatures averaging 20.89°C, making it the second hottest April for oceans as well. Scientists warn that this persistent warming trend, despite the cooling effects of La Niña, underscores the urgent need for accelerated climate action.
