Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district, marking 75 years since the reconstruction and re-consecration of the historic Somnath Temple. Calling Somnath a symbol of India’s resilience, he declared that “no power can make India bow” and said the festival will inspire the nation for the next 1,000 years.
The Somnath Amrut Mahotsav commemorates the 1951 inauguration of the restored temple by India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, after centuries of repeated invasions and destruction. PM Modi led special rituals, addressed devotees, and joined a roadshow as Somnath turned into a grand stage of faith, culture and national pride.
Rituals, Roadshow And Aerial Salute
Ceremonies At The First Jyotirlinga
At the temple, Modi performed Abhishek, Dhwaj Pooja, Maha Pooja and a special Kumbhabhishek, using holy water brought from 11 sacred pilgrimage sites across India. Flower petals were showered on the temple from helicopters, while the Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran aerobatic team staged Somnath’s first-ever air show over the shrine.
Massive Public Welcome
Colour, Devotion And A 1.5-Km Roadshow
Before the event, PM Modi held a 1.5‑km roadshow from the helipad to Veer Hamirji Circle near the temple, cheered by thousands lining the route with flags and slogans. Artists from across India, including West Bengal, performed traditional dances along the way, turning the coastal town into a live tableau of pan-Indian culture.
Key Themes From PM Modi’s Address
Civilisational Pride And Nuclear Resolve
In his speech, Modi said Somnath is not just a temple but a testament to India’s civilisational continuity and Sanatana Dharma, recalling how Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel led its post-independence reconstruction. He linked the Mahotsav to the Pokhran nuclear tests of May 11 and 13, describing them as proof that India’s spiritual strength is matched by strategic self-confidence.
Somnath’s Place In New India
From Plunder To “Amrut” Era
The Prime Minister framed Somnath Amrut Mahotsav as a celebration of India “reclaiming its civilisational glory” after centuries of plunder and colonialism. He said the temple’s journey from repeated destruction to proud revival mirrors a New India that refuses to bow and is entering an “amrit kaal” of cultural and national resurgence.
