Vijay’s First Big Move As CM: 717 Liquor Shops Near Schools, Temples And Bus Stands Ordered To Down Shutters

Tamil Nadu currently operates 4,765 TASMAC liquor retail shops across the state. Following a statewide survey ordered by CM Vijay, authorities identified 717 outlets falling within the 500 metre restricted zone, comprising 276 shops near places of worship, 186 near schools and colleges and 255 near bus stands. All 717 have been directed to close within a fortnight under the new order.

Public Safety At The Core

The move is largely driven by public welfare concerns, particularly women's safety at bus stands, where open TASMAC shops have long been associated with harassment, loitering and public nuisance. Community groups, parents and religious organisations had repeatedly flagged the proximity of liquor outlets to sensitive public spaces as a serious social issue.

Revenue Vs Reform Balance

TASMAC liquor revenue contributes significantly to Tamil Nadu's state finances. However, government officials noted that closing 717 outlets out of 4,765 total shops is not expected to cause a major revenue shortfall, as the remaining network will continue operating normally. The administration has also indicated plans to explore alternative revenue streams to cushion any minor impact.
