The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a mission-mode campaign to complete Aadhaar Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBU) for schoolchildren. This initiative, free for students aged 7-15 until October 2026, is designed to ensure that children’s Aadhaar records remain valid and usable for authentication in education and welfare services.

Why MBU Matters For Students

Children below five years of age are enrolled in Aadhaar without fingerprints or iris scans, as biometrics are not fully developed. Once they cross ages 5 and 15, biometric updates become essential. Without MBU, students may face authentication issues while applying for scholarships, registering for competitive exams, or availing government benefits.

Nationwide School-Based Drive

Since September 2025, UIDAI has collaborated with the Department of School Education and Literacy, state governments, and district administrations to organize biometric update camps directly in schools. This integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) has enabled authorities to identify students needing updates and streamline the process.

Accessibility And Free Updates

To encourage participation, UIDAI has waived charges for MBU for children aged 7–15 for one year, starting October 1, 2025. Updates for children aged 5–7 and 15–17 also remain free. Students can complete their MBU either at school camps or at Aadhaar enrolment centres and Aadhaar Seva Kendras nationwide.

Impact On Education And Welfare

The campaign has already covered more than 1.03 lakh schools and benefitted 1.2 crore students. By ensuring updated biometrics, the initiative strengthens India’s digital identity ecosystem and supports the government’s “One Nation, One Student” vision through seamless access to exams, scholarships, and welfare schemes.
