Supply Weakness Meets Steady Demand: Power Sector Lifts More Coal Despite Output Decline

India’s largest coal miner has already seen production contract 1.7 per cent in FY26, missing its annual output target and facing weather, logistics and operational constraints at several subsidiaries. Against that backdrop, a double digit production decline in May will keep attention on stock levels at power plants and the extent to which imports or inventory buffers will need to plug the gap.

Production Pressure Versus Market Pull

The 11.6 per cent year on year fall in May output extends a weak production trend that began towards the end of FY26, with several Coal India arms reporting lower volumes. However, the 2.2 per cent rise in offtake indicates that customers, especially power utilities, are still lifting more coal than a year ago, helped by existing pithead and power plant stocks. This divergence suggests domestic demand remains intact even as supply growth stumbles.

What Investors And Policymakers Will Watch

For markets, the key question is whether the production shortfall proves temporary or signals a more structural slowdown in Coal India’s ability to ramp volumes. For the government, which is simultaneously planning to offload up to a 2 per cent stake in the company via an OFS, maintaining supply assurance to power plants will be critical. Any prolonged gap between production and offtake could also reopen the door to higher coal imports if inventories thin out.
