Suzlon Energy Unveils New Product to Boost Output of Ageing Wind Turbines

Suzlon Energy is set to enhance the efficiency of ageing wind turbines with a new product designed to increase their capacity. The initiative aims to tap into India’s repowering potential, particularly for turbines installed before 2000, which operate at lower capacities and hub heights compared to modern wind energy systems.  

Key Developments in Suzlon’s Repowering Strategy  
- The company plans to begin leveraging repowering opportunities by the end of 2025, with significant traction expected between FY27 and FY28.  
- The new product will focus on increasing the capacity of older turbines by replacing key components such as blades and nacelles.  
- India has an estimated repowering potential of 25.4 GW for wind turbines below 2 MW capacity, with Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh leading in repowering opportunities.  

Challenges and Industry Trends  
- Many older wind turbines have completed or are nearing the end of their design life, making them less efficient compared to newer models.  
- Developers often prefer virgin sites over repowering due to the higher costs associated with uprooting and replacing existing turbines.  
- The Union government’s National Repowering & Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects – 2023 aims to support repowering initiatives across the country.  

Future Outlook and Market Expansion  
- Suzlon is also working on a variant of its S144 wind turbine generator, which emerged as its top-performing product in FY25.  
- The company has incurred a capital expenditure of ₹350 crore during FY25 and expects to spend between ₹400-450 crore in FY26.  
- With advancements in wind energy technology, repowering is expected to play a crucial role in India’s renewable energy transition.
