The UK is weighing whether, in a serious emergency, the government should be able to slow down, restrict or even shut off certain high‑risk AI systems. The idea is to have an AI “kill switch” ready for worst‑case scenarios. As India races ahead with AI in governance, finance, healthcare and public services, the big question is whether a similar emergency option here would be a smart safety net or an invitation to abuse.

A New Kind Of Emergency Power

In the UK’s case, nobody is talking about silencing every chatbot overnight. The focus is on AI models that plug into critical infrastructure, security systems, financial markets or major information networks. In a cyberattack, a disinformation wave or a tech failure gone wrong, the state would have the legal room to pause or limit specific systems before the damage spirals.

Those powers would likely sit alongside existing national security and technology laws, with some checks, procedures and thresholds built in. Even so, civil rights groups have flagged an obvious concern: who decides what counts as an “emergency,” and how far can that definition be stretched?

What This Debate Means For India

India is in a very different place, but with similar risks. AI is slowly being woven into policing tools, welfare delivery, bank risk engines, hospital workflows and digital public infrastructure. A UK‑style emergency framework here would raise hard questions: which AI systems are so critical that they can be shut or throttled only by law, and who gets the final say?

There is another layer: millions of people in India depend on digital rails for everyday life. A blunt “off switch” could end up freezing payments, disrupting hospital systems or blocking key government services when people need them most. Any Indian approach would have to be more precise slowing or isolating specific risky tools, not flipping one big master switch.
