Thailand Makes Historic Move: Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage in Southeast Asian First

In a landmark decision, Thailand has become Southeast Asia's first nation to legalize same-sex marriage, effective January 23, 2025. The Marriage Equality Act grants LGBTQ+ couples full legal rights, including adoption, inheritance, and medical decision-making privileges. The law is expected to boost Thailand's economy, creating 76,000 jobs and attracting 4 million additional tourists. On day one, 878 district offices nationwide began processing marriages, with LGBTQ+ groups aiming for a record 1,448 wedding registrations. Thailand joins Taiwan and Nepal as Asia's third country to recognize marriage equality.
