VinFast Shifts Gears: Vietnam’s EV Powerhouse Zips Into India

Vietnamese electric vehicle behemoth VinFast is poised to make an entry into the Indian automotive market, launching an extensive strategy that places the company as a serious new player in the premium EV segment. With the launch of its VF7 and VF6 models opening up for bookings this month, VinFast has plans for a festival season debut, supported by a $2 billion outlay and a cutting-edge factory in Tamil Nadu.

Key Highlights:

Model Launches: The VF7 will launch initially, which will fall in the range of ₹22 lakh to ₹30 lakh, and then the VF6 in the range of ₹18 lakh to ₹24 lakh—both set to take on established competitors such as Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, and BYD.

Manufacturing Hub: Thoothukudi plant, which began operations in July, will have an initial production of 50,000 vehicles per year, increasing to 150,000 units to cater to domestic and export markets. Domestic assembly as CKD units guarantees competitive prices and employment generation, with 3,500 new jobs anticipated by 2030.

Dealer & Service Network: VinFast has obtained six dealer partners already and will continue adding seven more dealers across tier-1 and tier-2 cities. VinFast will also partner with third-party service centers to provide extensive after-sales support.

Charging Infrastructure: VinFast, through its subsidiary V-Green, will install DC fast chargers (60kW–300kW) across the country and tie up with Tata Power to strengthen India's EV charging infrastructure.

Commercial & Pre-owned Plans: GSM will launch electric fleet services for ride-hailing, and a pre-owned EV business is planned for launch in the period 2027-28.

Wider Vision: EVs aside, Vingroup is looking to invest in renewable energy, electric buses, hotels, and smart city development opportunities in India.

VinFast's aggressive deployment, strong investments, and end-to-end ecosystem strategy mark a bold new dawn for India's electric mobility sector.
