Volkswagen Challenges $1.4 Billion Tax Demand In Indian Court

Volkswagen has filed a lawsuit in the Bombay High Court to challenge a $1.4 billion tax demand from Indian authorities. The German automaker claims the demand contradicts India's import taxation rules for car parts and jeopardizes its $1.5 billion investment in the country. Volkswagen argues it followed a "part-by-part import" strategy, which was previously approved by the government in 2011. The company denies allegations of misclassifying imports to evade higher taxes, stating it imported components separately and integrated them with locally sourced parts. This legal battle could have significant implications for foreign investment in India.
