Darrell Spencer, 29, a former media sales professional at Meta, LinkedIn, Google, and Pinterest from Chicago, Illinois, founded Crowned Skin in March 2024 with $10,000 of his own money, creating cologne-infused body butters specifically designed for Black men that replaced the traditional three-step male grooming routine with one product. Fully bootstrapped to $15 million in 2025, ranked number one men's grooming brand on TikTok Shop post-Shark Tank, named Black Beauty Founders first male cover star, and secured a $500,000 deal from Rashaun Williams on Shark Tank Season 17 Episode 17, Crowned Skin is rewriting men's grooming.
Chicago, Meta, LinkedIn, Google, Pinterest, and a Question That Built a Category for Black Men
Darrell Spencer grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and built a career in media sales at some of the world's most respected digital advertising platforms including Meta, LinkedIn, Google, and Pinterest. That background gave him a precisely calibrated understanding of how consumer products find their audience through digital channels.
But the business insight that created Crowned Skin was both strategic and deeply personal.
As a Black man, Spencer wanted to introduce a product specifically designed to meet the skincare needs of Black men while promoting representation and confidence. He began questioning why men had to apply lotion, body butter, and cologne separately to achieve both skincare benefits and scent. Every product in his grooming routine solved one problem and ignored the other two.
His answer was cologne-infused body butter, a product category that did not previously exist, formulated with naturally derived ingredients including shea butter, sunflower wax, jojoba oil, and mango butter, infused with cologne-grade fragrance that delivered long-lasting scent while moisturising the skin in a single step. Clean formulations with no harsh chemicals.
"Men like simplicity, so we cut down what would normally be three products into one," Spencer says.
He launched Crowned Skin in March 2024 with $10,000 of his own capital. Fully bootstrapped from day one.
TikTok Shop, Number One Men's Grooming Brand, $701K Monthly Revenue in August 2026, and a New Category
The boldest business decision Spencer made was to build the brand on TikTok before anywhere else. With his background in digital media sales, he understood exactly how platforms monetise attention and convert it into commerce.
"We found success on TikTok," Spencer says.
The platform opened the door to TikTok Shop, where Crowned Skin became the number one men's grooming brand following its Shark Tank appearance. According to WWD's commerce intelligence data, Crowned Skin's TikTok Shop sales rose from approximately $485,000 in monthly revenue in January 2026 to $701,000 in August 2026, confirming it as one of the top-growing beauty brands on the platform. Spencer highlights TikTok Shop as particularly profitable because Crowned Skin relies less on flash sales than many competitors.
The brand reached $7 million by the end of year one. It generated $3.8 million in 2024. In a single month it generated $2 million in revenue through direct-to-consumer sales alone. When Spencer filmed his Shark Tank appearance in June 2025, the business was on track to reach $14 million in annual sales. By 2025, revenue hit $15 million. The company has surpassed $10 million in total lifetime sales with 100,000-plus customers. Sixty percent of sales come from direct-to-consumer channels and 40% through Amazon, where the brand ranks in the top 50 in men's grooming.
Crowned Skin dedicates 30% to 35% of revenue to marketing and advertising across Google, Meta, Snapchat, Amazon, and TikTok Shop. The product range includes body butter cologne and body oils in five varieties starting at $31.99, with a newly added discovery set retailing at $34.99. The core demographic is men aged 19 to 34 trading up from mass-market grooming brands and seeking premium scent experiences.
In July 2026, Black Beauty Founders named Darrell Spencer its first male cover star in Volume 7, recognising him as a founder who built a new category in men's grooming and reached eight figures in under two years.

The Shark Tank Moment — $2 Million in One Month, Chicago Roots, and Rashaun Williams Says Yes
Darrell Spencer appeared on Shark Tank Season 17 Episode 17, filmed in June 2025 and aired on April 15, 2026, seeking $500,000 for 5% equity, valuing Crowned Skin at $10 million. Spencer revealed he had hit $2 million in a single month through direct-to-consumer sales and had surpassed $10 million in total sales, numbers that stunned the room and turned the discussion immediately competitive.
Kevin O'Leary and Barbara Corcoran made a joint offer of $500,000 for 20% equity plus a $2 per unit royalty until $500,000 was repaid, dropping to 25 cents in perpetuity. Rashaun Williams, Chief Information Officer of Harbinger Sports Partners and Chicago native, offered $500,000 for 10% equity plus a $1 per unit royalty until $1 million was recouped. Barbara withdrew and strongly encouraged Darrell to take Rashaun's offer. Kevin stepped back.
Darrell accepted Rashaun's offer without negotiation. The Chicago connection between the two men was real and meaningful.
"Your growth, it speaks for itself. You got me out here smelling good," Williams told Spencer following the deal.
The final deal valued Crowned Skin at $5 million.
Post-Shark Tank, Crowned Skin is evaluating retail expansion into Macy's, Nordstrom, and Target. To support this, the brand has hired Michael Toure, founder and CEO of Toure Capital, to advise on fundraising. Toure recently worked with Dossier, which agreed to sell a majority stake to private equity firm American Pacific Group, confirming the calibre of strategic advice now supporting Crowned Skin's next phase.

The Most Powerful Consumer Brands Are the Ones That Ask the Most Obvious Question the Industry Forgot to Ask
The sharpest lesson from Crowned Skin's journey is this: the most defensible and most explosive consumer brands are built by founders who asked the simplest, most obvious question that the entire industry had somehow overlooked.
Why do men need three products instead of one?
Darrell Spencer asked that question. He invested $10,000. He built a category specifically for Black men. He scaled to $15 million in under two years. He did it fully bootstrapped. He did it on TikTok before retail. And he walked into Shark Tank and stunned the room with $2 million in a single month.
"This isn't your grandmother's cocoa butter," Spencer says. "Since launching, we've created a cult following online."
Twenty-nine years old. Ten thousand dollars. One question. Fifteen million dollars. Number one men's grooming brand on TikTok Shop. First male cover star of Black Beauty Founders.
And the global ambition to make Crowned Skin the king of men's personal care.
