Vineeta Singh, IIT Madras and IIM Ahmedabad alumna, turned down a record-breaking ₹1 crore Deutsche Bank offer at 23 to become an entrepreneur. After two startups and 100-plus investor rejections, she co-founded SUGAR Cosmetics in 2015 with husband Kaushik Mukherjee. Today the brand is valued at ₹4,100 crore with 200-plus stores and a presence across 45,000 retail outlets.
Two Startups, 100 Rejections, and 2 Lakh Women Who Changed Everything
Vineeta Singh was born in Anand, Gujarat, and grew up in Delhi in an academically driven household. Her father is a biophysicist at AIIMS and her mother holds a PhD. She won gold and silver medals for IIT Madras at Inter-IIT sports meets, completed her electrical engineering degree in 2005, and earned her MBA from IIM Ahmedabad in 2007.
After rejecting Deutsche Bank, she co-founded Quetzal in 2007, an employee background verification company that struggled to gain traction. In 2012, she and Kaushik Mukherjee, whom she had met at IIM Ahmedabad and married in 2011, launched Fab Bag, a monthly beauty subscription service. Two lakh Indian women subscribed and shared their preferences.
That data revealed something precise and powerful: Indian women wanted makeup that was transfer-proof, long-lasting, bold, and built for their specific skin tones and the Indian climate. Global brands were either too expensive or formulated for Western skin. The affordable Indian alternatives were uninspiring. The gap was enormous.
In 2015, Vineeta and Kaushik launched SUGAR Cosmetics.
100 Rejections, Then One Product That Proved Everything
Before SUGAR found its first investor, Vineeta faced over 100 rejection calls. Investors questioned the market size. Some offered funding only if Kaushik joined full-time, a condition Vineeta publicly called out as gender discrimination. She persisted anyway.
The product strategy was the answer to every doubt. SUGAR launched with matte lipsticks and transfer-proof formulations designed specifically for Indian skin tones, Indian humidity, and Indian heat. Every formula was guided by real feedback from the Fab Bag community. The brand positioned itself at the intersection of bold design and genuine performance, priced accessibly but never cheaply, making Indian women feel seen rather than served as an afterthought.
The digital-first launch through Nykaa, Amazon, and SUGAR's own website kept costs lean while building a loyal community. When offline expansion came, with the first store in Mumbai in 2018 and the first international store in Dubai in 2020, the brand already had a community waiting for it.
Bollywood star Ranveer Singh became an investor and brand evangelist in September 2022. L Catterton, the prestigious private equity firm backed by LVMH, invested $50 million, validating SUGAR as a global-quality consumer brand.

The Most Valuable Offers Are Sometimes the Ones You Walk Away From
The sharpest lesson from Vineeta Singh's journey is this: the courage to walk away from certainty is the rarest and most powerful quality a founder can possess.
At 23, Vineeta had every reason to say yes to Deutsche Bank. The salary was historic. The prestige was unmatched. The safety was complete. She said no because she understood something that most people learn only much later: that security and purpose are rarely found in the same place at the same time, and when they are in conflict, purpose always builds a more enduring life.
"I had my reservations when I turned down the job offer. But in keeping with my concept of having no regrets, I pursued my ambitions. I knew that if I did not do it now, I would regret it for the rest of my life," Vineeta says.
She rejected a ₹1 crore offer. She faced 100 rejections. She lost two startups. And she built a ₹4,100 crore beauty empire that has made millions of Indian women feel bold, seen, and unstoppable.
That is what conviction looks like when it is given enough time.
