A Curtain Call for Rono Mukherjee: Family Bids Farewell to a Life Behind the Lens

Veteran filmmaker Rono Mukherjee, who was the uncle of Bollywood stars Kajol and Rani Mukerji, sadly passed away in Mumbai on May 28 at the age of 83 after facing health challenges related to aging. He was well-known for directing classic films like Haiwan (1977) and Tu Hi Meri Zindagi (1965), and he held a respected place in the renowned Mukherjee film family, which has played a significant role in shaping Indian cinema over the years.

 

His funeral in Mumbai brought the Mukherjee family together in their time of sorrow, with his daughter Sharbani Mukherjee surrounded by cousins and close relatives. Even with the heavy rains, Tanishaa Mukerji and filmmaker Ayan Mukerji were present for the final rites, along with director Ashutosh Gowariker and other colleagues from the industry. Although Kajol couldn’t attend due to film promotions, her strong connection with the family, especially during the annual Durga Puja celebrations, was fondly remembered.

 

Rono Mukherjee’s passing is the second significant loss for the family this year, following the death of his younger brother, actor Deb Mukherjee, in March. The Mukherjee family, which includes legends like Joy Mukherjee and Shomu Mukherjee, remains a cornerstone of Bollywood’s rich legacy.

 

The heartfelt gathering at the funeral showcased the family’s solidarity and the immense respect Rono Mukherjee earned throughout his career. Fans and well-wishers have been sending their deepest condolences during this challenging time.
