A New Dawn for Rare Disease Treatment: Kerala Offers Free Growth Hormone Therapy

On World Rare Disease Day, Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced the availability of free growth hormone therapy under the KARE scheme aimed at curing children's congenital defects at the government's expense. The project intends to provide expert treatment for children with clinically diagnosed and treated congenital defects as early as possible. The exceedingly expensive hormone therapy, generally running to the tune of lakhs of rupees, was free of charge by KARE. A treatment camp at SAT Hospital has already managed to provide therapy for 20 children diagnosed with Turner syndrome and GH deficiency. Launched in February 2024, the KARE Project has also upgraded SAT Hospital to a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases and gives specialized treatment for 100 children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
