Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has announced the creation of India’s first Port of Refuge (POR) to enhance maritime safety. Two sites—Dighi Port on the west coast and Gopalpur Port on the east coast—will be designated as PORs, offering safe havens for vessels in distress.
The initiative marks a significant step in strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure. By designating these ports, APSEZ aims to provide emergency support, reduce risks for shipping companies, and align with global best practices in maritime safety management.
Dighi Port’s Strategic Role
Located in Maharashtra, Dighi Port will serve as a critical POR for vessels navigating the busy western coast. Its proximity to industrial hubs and connectivity to hinterland regions make it an ideal choice for emergency docking and cargo handling.
Gopalpur Port’s East Coast Advantage
Situated in Odisha, Gopalpur Port offers strong road and rail connectivity and is strategically positioned to serve mineral-rich regions. Its designation as a POR enhances safety for vessels operating along the eastern seaboard, ensuring rapid response capabilities.
Maritime Safety Impact
The establishment of PORs is expected to boost confidence among global shipping operators, reduce risks during emergencies, and support India’s ambition to become a leading maritime hub under the Sagarmala initiative.
