Afghanistan Shaken by Series of Earthquakes: Are Deeper Tremors a Greater Threat?

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at a depth of 10km. This shallow earthquake is more dangerous due to its proximity to the surface, causing stronger ground shaking and potential damage. Afghanistan experienced multiple earthquakes recently, including two 4.3 magnitude quakes on February 4, one at 60km depth and another at 10km depth. The country is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes, due to its location on fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Hindu Kush Mountain range is particularly active, with quakes occurring annually. These frequent earthquakes impact vulnerable communities already struggling with conflict and underdevelopment.
