Antilia vs Waqf Board: Will Ambanis’ Luxury Fortress Stand the Test of Law?

Mumbai's symbol of opulence, Mukesh and Nita Ambani's Antilia, finds itself at the center of a new legal maelstrom in the wake of the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Complaints have long been raised that the land over which the glitzy 27-story bungalow has been built was initially earmarked for Waqf property—a charity trust in accordance with Islamic traditions. The building, bought for ₹21 crore in 2002, had allegedly been proposed to be an orphanage and religious educational complex, leading questions about its transfer to private use.

The Waqf Board has challenged the validity of the deal, claiming that land under its control cannot be sold without necessary permissions. The issue has been pending in court for years, but fresh amendments to the Waqf Act have once again sparked controversy. If the Supreme Court decides against the Ambanis, they may be forced to leave their luxurious home.

This has raised general debates regarding ownership of land and control of religious trusts. While legal action continues, the future of Antilia remains uncertain, keeping it at the center of national focus.
