Arunachal Pradesh Loses 310 Square Kilometers of Glaciers in 32 Years

A recent study has revealed startling statistics for glacier retreat in Arunachal Pradesh, with 310 square kilometers of glacial cover lost in the past 32 years. Conducted by scientists located at Nagaland University and Cotton University, the study reveals that the region lost glaciers from 756 to 646 from 1988 to 2020. The report brings to fore the reality that smaller glaciers under 5 square kilometers are receding at the most rapid rate. Such a development gravely imperils access to water of millions whose farming and even domestic water supply depends on glacial meltwater. The findings highlight the need for climate adaptation strategies to manage water resources effectively and mitigate the impacts of climate change in the Eastern Himalayas, often referred to as the "Third Pole" due to its massive glacier reserves.
