Her father, Babu, a Malayali Muslim, and mother, Alice, a Pentecostal Christian, moved to Madras (now Chennai) with dreams of making it in cinema. Shalini was the second of the three, with her elder brother Richard Rishi and younger sister Shamili turning into actors. She studied in well-known schools in Chennai and thereafter finished college studies from Annamalai University. Shalini is also an avid badminton player and had played in state-level championships.

 

Meteoric Rise as a Child Artist

Shalini first fell into the grasp of the camera at the age of three, when she made her debut in the Malayalam film Ente Mamattikkuttiyammakku (1983). She received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist for her performance and paved the way to an illustrious career. Over the course of the 1980s, she was the highest-demanding child artist in Tamil and Malayalam cinema, and she acted in more than 80 films from languages such as Telugu, Kannada, and even Hindi. The couple’s romance blossomed on set, and Ajith proposed to Shalini, leading to their marriage on April 24, 2000, in Chennai. Their union was celebrated by fans and the film fraternity alike, symbolizing the coming together of two beloved stars from different backgrounds-Ajith, a Hindu, and Shalini, a Christian.

 

Following her marriage, Shalini chose to retire from acting, prioritizing her family and supporting Ajith’s career. The couple has two children, Anoushka and Aadvik.
