South Africans can now apply for and replace Smart ID cards at an expanding network of bank branches, dramatically cutting queues at traditional Home Affairs offices and speeding up digital ID services nationwide. The Department of Home Affairs is quietly rewriting the Smart ID experience by moving key services into everyday banking spaces. For millions of citizens, that means less time standing in line and more time using secure digital channels to manage their identity documents.

Smart IDs Go To The Bank Floor

Home Affairs now offers Smart ID services at more than 110 bank branches nationwide, a sharp increase driven by new digital partnership models with major banks. Participating branches let citizens complete online pre‑applications, then finalise biometrics and collection in a familiar, well‑managed banking environment. This model aims to ease pressure on the 349 traditional Home Affairs offices while expanding coverage into communities that previously had limited access.

Who Is On Board – And What You Can Do

Capitec, Standard Bank and First National Bank are among the banks already live, with Capitec contributing 77 branches, Standard Bank 30, and FNB three pilot sites in the latest rollout phase. Under the 2026 expansion framework, additional brands such as African Bank, Discovery Bank, Investec, Nedbank and TymeBank are being integrated to support Smart ID and, in some cases, passport services. Customers typically start online via the Home Affairs e‑services platform, pay the standard Smart ID fee, book a bank slot, capture fingerprints and photos, and then receive SMS confirmation when their card is ready.
