Bengal Unveils India’s Biggest Sports Incentive Plan With Record Cash Rewards

On May 19, 2026, West Bengal Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik announced sweeping reforms to boost sports development in the state. The new government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has pledged to transform Bengal’s sporting ecosystem, offering unprecedented financial rewards and career opportunities for athletes.

Olympic And International Incentives

• Under the revised plan:
• Olympic gold medal: ₹8 crore (earlier ₹25 lakh)
• Olympic silver medal: ₹6 crore (earlier ₹15 lakh)
• Olympic bronze medal: ₹4 crore (earlier ₹10 lakh)
• Additional rewards include:
• Asian Games: Gold ₹5 crore, Silver ₹4 crore, Bronze ₹2 crore
• World Championships: Gold ₹2 crore, Silver ₹1.5 crore, Bronze ₹1 crore
• Commonwealth Games: Gold ₹1.5 crore, Silver ₹75 lakh, Bronze ₹50 lakh 

Employment And Governance Reforms

Pramanik confirmed that medal-winning athletes will be considered for government jobs based on qualifications, with outstanding performers eligible for senior posts such as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). The state will also adopt a Sports Governance Act to streamline administration and ensure accountability. 

Grassroots Development

The government announced district-level sports festivals across 12 disciplines, aimed at identifying hidden talent in rural and marginal areas. Winners will compete in a mega final in Kolkata, creating pathways for young athletes to reach national and international levels.
