Reliance In Talks With CATL To Power Jamnagar Giga-Complex Clean Energy Plans

On May 19, 2026, reports confirmed that Reliance Industries is negotiating with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world’s largest battery manufacturer, to secure critical battery technology and components. The talks are central to Reliance’s strategy to build India’s biggest energy storage facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat, supporting the nation’s renewable energy goals.

Reliance’s Clean Energy Ambition

Reliance has committed ₹75,000 crore over three years to expand its green energy portfolio, including solar, hydrogen, and battery manufacturing. The Jamnagar giga-complex is expected to deliver 20 GW annual battery storage capacity by 2026–27, scaling up to 100 GWh per year in the long term. 

Why CATL Partnership Matters

• China has tightened export controls on advanced lithium-ion cell technology, limiting Reliance’s ability to manufacture cells domestically. Partnering with CATL allows Reliance to:
• Secure Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, known for cost efficiency and safety.
• Focus on battery pack integration and system assembly while bypassing restrictions on cell manufacturing.
• Strengthen supply chains and reduce execution risks for its giga-factory projects. 

Market Implications

India’s energy storage market is projected to expand to 336.7 GWh by 2035, nearly 115 times the installations in 2025. Reliance’s entry with CATL support positions it as a direct competitor to global utilities, while lowering the Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) for renewable power. This will be critical in balancing intermittent solar and wind generation.
