Bigger Bump Ahead? 2027 Social Security Raise Now Seen Higher As Inflation Reignites

New inflation data has nudged up forecasts for the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), with several analysts now pencilling in a bigger raise than they expected just a few months ago. For retirees, that could mean a noticeably larger monthly check next year, though the final number still depends on price trends through 2026.

Forecasts Shift From 2–3% To Near 4%

Earlier this year, many projections clustered around a roughly 2.8% COLA for 2027, in line with the 2026 increase and based on relatively tame inflation. With price pressures picking up again driven mainly by higher gasoline, energy and food costs new estimates now suggest the COLA could land closer to the 4% mark, which would be meaningfully higher than initially expected.

What A Higher COLA Means For Retirees

A COLA in the neighbourhood of 4% would be the biggest adjustment since the unusually large 8.7% hike in 2023 and clearly larger than this year’s increase. For an average monthly retirement benefit of a little over 2,000 dollars, that kind of adjustment would add roughly 80 dollars a month, modestly improving cash flow for seniors who have been squeezed by rising prices. At the same time, advocates caution that even a stronger COLA may still trail real-world cost increases in healthcare, rent, property taxes, utilities and groceries.

Why The 2027 COLA Is Still A Moving Target

The official 2027 COLA will be calculated using the CPI-W inflation index for the third quarter of 2026 and will be formally announced in October next year. Between now and then, several inflation readings, especially for fuel and core services, could shift the final number up or down. If energy and services inflation stay sticky, the final COLA could remain toward the upper end of current forecasts; a cooling economy or a drop in fuel costs could pull it back toward the low-3% range.
