Brewing Up a New Era: Women Crafting a New Future in India's Craft Beer

In a historic turn of events, women are taking center stage in India's traditionally male-dominated craft beer sector. Varsha Bhat, 38, has climbed to the position of head brewer at a trendy Bengaluru pub, defying stereotypes and demonstrating women's capabilities in every sphere of brewing. Lynette Pires, 32, established the Women Brewers Collective four years ago with the aim of supporting and empowering more women in the field.

The group, now 26 members, will release their 2025 beer, "Hazy Passion," on International Women's Day. The new beer, brewed by 16 women, employs hazy NEIPA and pineapple passion yeast, in honor of women entering the industry.

While a mere 1% of Indian women consume alcohol, Bengaluru's liberal and tech culture ensure that there is a healthy market for craft beer, with more women now both serving behind the bar and sitting at the table.
