Firming up their age-old cooperation, India and Nepal signed 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to launch high-impact community development schemes in Nepal. The schemes, under Indian grant aid of NPR 625 million, will enhance infrastructure in the education, health, and culture sectors.
The pacts were inked on Tuesday in Kathmandu by the representatives of the Embassy of India, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration of Nepal, and other implementing agencies of the project. The projects fall under the umbrella of the Nepal-India Development Cooperation, which has been a cornerstone of bilateral cooperation for over two decades.
Key Projects Under the MoUs
The signed MoUs encompass a broad range of projects aimed at addressing the most urgent needs in Nepal's provinces. The projects are:
Education Sector: Sanba Secondary School (Taplejung), Ninyukharka Secondary School (Gulmi), Naya Gaun Secondary School (Rupandehi), Siddhanath Secondary School (Kailali), and Shree Satyavadi Secondary School (Bajhang) will receive new school buildings. Shree Rastriya Primary School in Chitwan will also receive an e-library.
Health Sector: Construction of two health post buildings at Indrawati Rural Municipality, Sindhupalchowk District.
Cultural Sector: Construction of the Ngagyur Nyngma Palyul Dhongag Chholing Monastery in Solukhumbu and Nepal-Bharat Maitri Hospital in Humla.
These projects shall be executed by local government organs such as metropolitan cities, sub-metropolitan cities, municipalities, and rural municipalities.
Greater Effect on Nepal's Development: The Indian Embassy again asserted that such High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) are intended to strengthen grassroots infrastructure in terms of enhanced educational facilities, improved health and healthcare services, and preservation of cultural heritage. India has implemented over 573 such projects in Nepal since 2003 out of which 495 have been completed. These measures vary across infrastructures in terms of road and bridge, irrigation, electrification, provision of drinking water, and social welfare.
The continued cooperation is a sign of India's determination to help Nepal achieve socio-economic development. The Indian Embassy said these efforts are a testament to the close people-to-people relations between the two countries and attest to their common vision for sustainable development.
A Testament to Bilateral Cooperation:
As close neighbors with a rich history of cultural and historical relationships, India and Nepal remain engaged in extensive cooperation in various fields. The signing of these MoUs is a reflection of India's position as a leading development partner to Nepal. The two nations felt that these efforts would have a significant contribution to enhance the quality of life of the people in Nepal's seven provinces. This new agreement is another milestone in the long history of relations between the two nations. It is proof of their mutual interest in bringing regional prosperity and stability through collective efforts.
