BYD-ing Time for Honda in India's Scooter Market

Honda's supremacy in India's scooter market could be challenged by Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD. As electric two-wheelers pick up pace, BYD is working on an electric maxi-scooter, set to unveil at EICMA 2024. On the other hand, Honda's Activa e: electric scooter, which debuted in January 2025, provides a 102 km range and 80 kph top speed. But domestic competitors such as Ola Electric and TVS are going full steam ahead with their electric variants. With EVs likely to account for as much as 50% of two-wheeler sales by 2030, Honda's goal of 4 million electric two-wheelers is below its current market share. The transition is similar to China's automobile market, where legacy brands have been replaced by local EV players.
