Carbonated Conundrum: India's Beverage Tax Puts the Industry in a Twist

India is a world anomaly when it comes to the very high taxation of non-alcoholic drinks, and more importantly, carbonated soft drinks, at a staggering 40%. This comprises a 28% GST and a 12% compensation cess, one of the highest taxed industries in the world. The Indian Beverage Association (IBA) is demanding reform, stating that this excessive tax burden is disenfranchising growth, innovation, and investment. Conversely, more than 90% of nations have lower tax rates on sugar-sweetened drinks, tending to favor sugar-based taxation systems to promote healthier choices. While India seeks to increase economic growth and employment, the industry is optimistic about reducing the rate to 28% in 2026 when the cess will presumably be waived. Will India join the world or stick to its own path? The fate of the beverage industry is in the balance.
