Central Government Employees Eye Historic 283% Salary Jump Under 8th Pay Commission

The 8th Pay Commission, formally constituted in November 2025, has begun consultations with employee unions and pensioner associations. The first round of meetings in New Delhi concluded last week, with unions demanding a significant reset in pay, pensions, and allowances to reflect rising living costs.

Proposed Salary And Pension Hike

Employee representatives have sought a fitment factor of 3.83, compared to 2.57 under the 7th Pay Commission. If accepted, this would mean:

Minimum basic salary rising from ₹18,000 to ₹68,940

Minimum pension increasing from ₹9,000 to ₹34,470  

This represents a 283% jump in both salary and pension, marking the largest proposed hike in decades.

Broader Demands

Apart from salary hikes, unions have also requested:

Restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS)

Higher allowances, including revised HRA slabs

Assured promotions and structural reforms in the pay matrix

Government’s Position

The Commission has extended the deadline for memorandum submissions to May 31, 2026, and will hold regional consultations in Hyderabad, Srinagar, and Ladakh. Final recommendations are expected by May 2027, with implementation likely from January 2026, including arrears.
