Chess Titans Clash: St. Joseph’s College Hosts Global Championship

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is celebrating its 150th anniversary with the prestigious St. Joseph’s Chess Cup, bringing together eight world-class chess champions from five countries for a thrilling two-day tournament. Held from April 12 to 13, the event highlights the school’s commitment to fostering global chess talent and cultural exchange.  

The opening ceremony saw distinguished guests, including Wang Jian, Director-General of the International Department of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, alongside consuls from India, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan. SJC Principal Kwok Tik-man emphasized that the tournament is not just about competition but also about youth development and international camaraderie.  

A major highlight of this year’s event is a special exhibition match between the tournament’s grand champion and AI system DeepSeek on April 13. This groundbreaking face-off aims to showcase how technology can enhance traditional chess strategies, echoing historic man-versus-machine battles like IBM’s DeepBlue vs. Garry Kasparov.  

Hong Kong’s youngest contender, Form 4 student Chan, shared his preparation strategy, stating, “I practice meditation to stay calm—it sharpens my mind.” Meanwhile, veteran chess player Daniel Lam King-wai, Hong Kong’s three-time chess champion, expressed pride in seeing a new generation of talent emerge from SJC.
