Connectivity Coup: 56 Mins from Kavi Subhash to Airport – Kolkata Gears for Metro Boom!

Kolkata Metro's ambitious Orange Line stands as a beacon of urban transformation, bridging the bustling southern suburbs with the gleaming Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Envisioned since 2010-11 under a Rs 3,952 crore project sanctioned by then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, this 29.87 km stretch weaves through key growth corridors like New Town's IT hubs and Salt Lake's tech parks. Currently operational over 9.9 km from Kavi Subhash (New Garia) to Beleghata since August 2025, it has already onboarded 5.92 lakh passengers in the recent fiscal, signaling strong commuter appetite.

 

The line's strategic interchanges amplify its impact: Blue Line at Kavi Subhash for seamless southbound hops, Green Line at IT Centre for Sector V access, and Yellow Line at the underground Jai Hind station right by the airport. This connectivity web not only eases the notorious airport commute but also funnels talent to IT epicenters, fostering job creation and real estate booms. Metro authorities target December 2026 for full commissioning, with viaduct gaps like Chingrighata closing by February and trial runs accelerating.
