Cracking the AI Code: India's Minister of Commerce and Industry - Piyush Goyal Says It's Time to Face the Music

Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry, put forth an argument in favor of a regulatory mechanism to govern AI in India, which would facilitate its integration into daily life onward and prevent the country from lagging behind in what is becoming a frantic scramble for an advantage in the age of AI. Speaking at the Mumbai Tech Week 2025, Goyal said, "We really need to be on the ball and get ourselves ready to have the regulatory framework to adopt AI and make sure we don't fall behind the race."

 

The minister did highlight India's capacity to ethically use data, obviously keeping in mind privacy. Open to suggestions from various stakeholders regarding the framework, this call for regulation comes as India positions itself as an AI powerhouse in the world with over 200 AI startups raising 1.2 billion dollars and counting since 2020.
