Delhi is poised to seal a new excise policy after nearly three years of indecision, but the authorities indicate that the drinking age will not be lowered to 25 years. The government, which is now being led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is reviewing other state policies in order to create a balanced, transparent model for the purpose of boosting revenue, checking illegal sales, and improving the consumer experience. Contrary to industry pressures to fall in line with the lower drinking ages of adjacent Noida and Gurugram, the government prefers to maintain the current status quo, balancing public health and regulatory continuity. The policy, extended until June 30, 2025, keeps liquor retail with four government corporations with no immediate plans for private players or home delivery.
