In a major infrastructure boost for eastern Maharashtra, the state government has cleared four access controlled expressway and highway projects spanning about 547 to 550 kilometres across Vidarbha. With an overall outlay of around ₹51,906 crore, the new corridors will link Nagpur with Gondia, Bhandara, Gadchiroli and Chandrapur, improve east west connectivity and integrate the mineral rich region with mainstream growth.
Vidarbha is set for its biggest road building phase yet. At a recent Infrastructure Committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra granted administrative approval to a network of new expressways designed to mirror the high speed Samruddhi Mahamarg model in the east. Officials say the four projects will cut travel time, decongest existing highways and open up fresh industrial, mining and logistics opportunities across multiple districts.
Four High Speed Corridors Across 547 Km
According to the Times of India and Indian Express, the government has cleared four access controlled projects in Vidarbha.
These are the Nagpur Gondia Expressway, the Bhandara Gadchiroli Expressway, the Nagpur Chandrapur Expressway and the Navegaon More Konsari to Surjagad Greenfield Road in Gadchiroli, together adding around 547 to 550 kilometres of new high speed connectivity.
Civil Works And Total Outlay
The combined civil construction cost of the four projects is estimated at about ₹32,478 crore, while the overall project cost including land acquisition, utilities shifting and other expenses is pegged at approximately ₹51,906.35 crore.
The corridors will be developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation with the aim of creating an eastern expressway grid that complements the existing Nagpur Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg.
Key Routes And Districts Covered
The Nagpur Gondia Expressway will run roughly 162 kilometres connecting Nagpur to Gondia and providing faster access toward Chhattisgarh.
The Bhandara Gadchiroli Expressway is planned at about 94 kilometres, improving connectivity for the forest and mining belts of Gadchiroli, while the Nagpur Chandrapur Expressway will be around 191 to 205 kilometres long, linking industrial and coal mining zones.
The Navegaon More Konsari to Surjagarh Greenfield road will connect Chandrapur and Gadchiroli regions, improving last mile access to mineral rich Surjagarh.
Deadlines And Execution Targets
Reports say the government has instructed departments to fast track land acquisition and project packaging so that the expressways can be completed by December 2028.
The corridors are designed as access controlled routes with limited interchanges and design speeds comparable to the Samruddhi Mahamarg, targeting significant reductions in travel time across eastern Vidarbha.
Why It Matters For Vidarbha
Officials and local industry bodies believe the new expressway grid will make districts like Gondia, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli more attractive for manufacturing, logistics, tourism and mining investments.
By directly linking eastern districts to Nagpur and onward to western Maharashtra, the projects are expected to narrow the long standing development gap between Vidarbha and the rest of the state and support new jobs in construction, ancillary services and regional trade.
